A buddy collected this calcite at an Ontario (Canada) quarry. I will never again think calcite is boring.

Calcite specimens are awesome. There are some really beautiful formations and colors.
It just pretty much sucks for lapidary use.

Agreed. Not much good for lapidary. However, wonderful stuff to etch to expose crystals not affected by the acid.

I picked up a piece of rainbow calcite that is crystalline, and it has nearly every color of the rainbow. Pretty stuff.

Greig - that looks sweet! I was down at Teepee Canyon - getting skunked looking for agates, but I did see an amazing crystaline pocket that was in the bedrock. I couldn't access it to try and mine it out of there...and I crushed my phone in my truck door on the way up, so I couldn't even take any pics while I was there. LOL - Your picture really reminds me of what I saw that day...gorgeous!!!

I have never seen rainbow calcite. Do you have a picture you can share? Kind of. Man, I don't take as many pictures as I think. I assure you it looks better than this, but it's wrapped up in a box somewhere right now. [

I didn't see it sitting there until too late and it slid into the gap and didn't like it there. Now, I don't feel so badly. How the heck did yours get in the door? Where there is one crystal vug, there are probably more. Difficult to mine them without breaking the crystals. A concrete saw works well. Drilling and feather wedges is probably the best way. Drilling and making rocks go boom is the most fun. I'd put the the latter into a video, but YT wouldn't like it.

My father-in-law called on the drive down to Custer. I handed the phone to my wife. When she got done, rather than putting it in my pocket, I put it between my legs for "safe keeping". When I got out of the truck, it slid off my lap and got slammed as I shut the door. A split second longer or shorter on the fall and it would've been fine...but it didn't! LOL Thankfully it was just the screen that had to be replaced. Only hand tools are allowed in Teepee Canyon...so no concrete saw...and definitely no "boom boom"! LOL

I have calcite from many states and several countries. Well, at least 3 countries, might be more.

greig, does that fluoresce? Calcite usually fluoresces orange.

I think Crystal's are awesome. I like minerals in their natural form. Smoky Quartz is the best imo.
That is a very nice specimen and it would actually be something I would consider adding to my collection, it is that good of a sample.
You can tell my cubical at work because it is the one with all the crystals. I will soon add rocks.

Close to 90% of my close calls while biking have been with drivers who are on the phone. Too bad you got skunked on Teepees. As for making rocks go boom... it definitely does not help material be less fractured.

But does that one? Oh wait, it's not yours, it's your buddy's? I was at the spot this was collected yesterday. Just for you, I will UV some just to see how they react. I have to clean them first, so it may be a few days.

I collected calcite in Southern Ontario on the Niagara Escarpment yesterday. Here is one sample: And to answer the question "Is it fluorescent"? I tried UVA, UVB and UVC and surprisingly the answer is "No"
