I have been very sick for the past two weeks. Am feeling a little better now, so am starting to put together boxes for members of the Rockhounding 4 Homebound group. The first one is for a child who has a skull deformity and other medical issues. She has been in a lot of pain and undergone numerous surgeries since she was very young. 11 year old Ann has another skull surgery in the near future. She loves rocks, fossils and crystals. Says they help her to feel better. This box contains an Amethyst cluster. Her favorite color is purple. There are also some Apache Tears, Crystal/Rose Quartz, fossil shells, Mystic Merlinite/ Indigo Gabbro, a carved critter, WI Moonstone, LSA and a piece of Coprolite (from Randy). The jewelry findings were purchased from someone here. Fish I think. I will be posting future boxes here and giving credit to those who I was given the items by or purchased them from. Will mention a little about the recipient.

Cool concept. Is this through the facebook page? Do you know if they are open to already processed (as in tumble polished) stones?

Cool concept. Is this through the facebook page? Do you know if they are open to already processed (as in tumble polished) stones? Yes, via their FB page. Anything rock/fossil is appreciated. Items can be sent in bulk to the group Admin who will send out to various individuals. Some people are sending 1 polished/rpugh rock to an individual. Others are sending envelopes/small boxes of rocks to individuals. Some members are providing postage for others to send items. There are three types of people there. Gifters, receivers and combos. Some receivers are only asking for 1 rock from each State. Items received are usually posted to the group. If you are interested, I would suggest joining the FB group.

Am almost finished with 9 more boxes to send to Rockhounding 4 Homebound members. All contain: Coprolite from Randy. RWA3006Carnelian from amygdule via Brian. Misc. slabettes purchased from diane. Chrysocolla, AZ. Apache Tears, NM. Clear or Rose Quartz mini-sphere. Portage County, WI Quartzite. Black Coral. Copper Ore, UP MI. Rocks from Paradise Beach, Grand Marias, MN. WI Moonstone. Jewelry findings. I might be adding some more items to fill the boxes. Each item has a printed label wrapped around it that contains ID and where from if known. Each item is wrapped in either foam or bubble wrap. I will be sending a MFRB to the group Admin. She often receives boxes of items and sends them out to homebound members. This will include most of the items I received from rockhoundingwithkids I don’t like to pick and choose who gets what, for the most part. Hence, my including the same items in all the boxes I am sending. I also do not like to send a single rock to someone. The selecting, sorting, labeling and packing of the boxes I am sending out has been very rewarding, but tiring. Trying to determine the wants of recipients when they say anything is fine has been a challenge. The group will be paying for postage for me to send out these boxes. Recipients of these boxes are: A young man with cognitive and physical challenges. He loves rocks. Does research on them. He recently received a rock tumbler from another group member. He loves to share his rock knowledge with his caregivers. A girl who has some serious medical issues. She is mostly homebound and loves rocks. A Grandma who used to collect rocks and do lapidary. She is homebound and utilizes a wheelchair. She is teaching her grandchildren about rocks. Some other mostly homebound adults who are teaching their children/grandchildren about rocks. A couple of them do go on short rock hunts with their children and grandchildren. An adult, former rock collector. She is now homebound, but does lapidary work. A couple of people who are not homebound. They send rocks to homebound group members. Anyone who sends rocks to others deserves to receive some now and then. This is part of the group rules, that someone can be both a sender and recipient. I love being a part of this group.

Good on ya, Beth! Way to go! I am also trading some of the coprolite you gave me. I will be reciving some rock ID books for children, carved dino's and some cool rocks to give to homebound children. I will never be able to thank you enough for giving me some coprolite. It will enhance the lives of so many. The person I am trading with is local. I have purhased and traded items with him in the past. No postage inviolved, which is huge.

That's cool fernwood , Thank You Did you ever check those quartz marbles for asterism ? You need a single, pinpoint source of light. The Sun works best, but a small flashlight will work too. Asterism may appear with either reflected or transmitted light, depending on the translucence of the stone. Here is an example of a quartz star with transmitted light from a flashlight.

I just need to break some of the larger ones you sent down so I can include them in the SFRB's I am sending out.

I ended up taking 3 more to PO, as I had an emergency run to hardware store. Also, picked up 10 more boxes. I am getting addicted to sharing rocks and other items with the homebound group.

A thank you to members here for sending me things to include in more boxes to send out.
I am also starting a Traveling Rock Box, modeled on the one we used to have here. The response was amazing, so now another member is starting a second traveling rock box. When I joined in December, there were about 500 members in the group, mostly from Michigan. Now there are over 2000 members from across the USA.
Am also including some items I was gifted or purchased from here. Other items I purchased or was gifted from people not RTH members. Many self found items.
To be frank, I have thousands of pounds of rocks, slabs, jewelry findings, drilled rock strands, rock beads and other items I may never use.
My recent illnesses caused me to step back and think.
Do I keep them for future use or do I bring joy to others now? The answer was easy. I know that many of the items I have would either be thrown in my fields or sold for little should I suddenly cease to exist.
There are many special items that I am keeping, but am labeling everything I keep with what it is, who it came from, and value, if known.
Thank you to RTH members for giving me the knowledge to do something like this.

I was in awe with what rockjunquie sent me for this wonderful group. Some will be going in the Traveling Rock Box. Some will be used by another group member who is putting together another Traveling Rock Box. The concept of a traveling rock box was something very special for the homebound members of the group. No one had ever heard of such a thing. As of yesterday, we have enough people interested to have 2 more traveling boxes. I can only handle coordinating one traveling box at a time, so hoping someone else is willing to take them on. I limited each traveling box to 15 people. Based on my experiences here, it could be at least 9 months for everyone on the list to get the box. The group admins and moderators will determine what happens with the rest of the items Tela donated. I have some ideas, but want to ensure that some are sent to people who are homebound. Both children and adults who are no longer able to get out and collect rocks. Another thank you to everything RTH has shown me and provided for me to brighten the lives of others. I could not have done it without you.

I have 4 more boxes ready to send for R 4 H members. Am also working on the traveling rock box for the R 4 H group. All boxes include items from several on this list: amygdule RWA3006 Tommy Brian rockjunquie woodman rockhoundingwithkids manofglass wigglinrocks drocknut fencejumper toiv0 bcrockhound and others. I was either given, won, purchased or found all of the materials in the boxes. Some was purchased/gifted locally. Some of the materials given to me were items the sender either won or were given by RTH members. RTH is brightening the lives of so many. The Traveling Rock Box is somewhat different than the RTH one. Many of those on the list do not do lapidary work. They just collect/appreciate rocks. Some tumble or make cabochons. Some wire wrap. Others make necklaces with drilled rock beads. A few have set up a map of the USA. They are gluing a rock from each state on it. Rocks from Alaska and Hawaii are very scarce in the R 4 H group, but I am including some Dallasite from BC, Canada, that I purchased here. I will post some photos of the Traveling Rock Box, before its journey starts. Thanks again to RTH members for helping me with this. Whether you donated items for the boxes, provided ID info, or liked/commented on my posts. You are all appreciated very much.

RWA3006 The coprolite is brightening the lives of many. A good friend of mine recently had a birthday. She has two young sons who are into rocks, fossils and geology. I gave her a bag of rocks/fossils. Her sons loved the coprolite. The older one is now researching SE Utah Hadrosaur. He wants to go there this Summer and wonders if any fossil beds of dino bones and coprolite are open to the public. He does not need to collect, just explore. He is 14 years old and his Mom (my friend) would accompany him. Collecting a few pieces of coprolite would be a bonus to him. Him and his Mom were planning a trip to AZ, so a side trip to Utah is within reason. She encourages her sons to explore things like this.

Beth, you can direct these folk to page 83 in the coprolite thread for directions where to go for coprolite hunting. It usually works well to stay at the Whispering Sands motel at Hanksville to explore the area.

fernwood Dinosaur National Monument in North East Utah is totally awesome. "Visitors can see over 1,500 dinosaur fossils exposed on the cliff face inside the Quarry Exhibit Hall."
