Hey folks! Picked up a nice little collection last weekend. This was leftovers from the guy’s parent’s lapidary shop/jewelry store they had many years ago in Los Angeles. He held onto it for quite a while then decided it was time to let it go. Here’s a pic of what we brought home

After a little clean up here’s the breakdown

Coconut halves and geodes. Some of these were in an old metal bucket for year and have rust stains that need to be dealt with

EXTREMELY RARE COCA COLA GLASS SPHERE

A rock dealer friend told me that the glass was from a Coca-Cola plant in Texas that burned down in 1950. Apparently all the molten glass
ran down into the basement where it was left to cool down. They had such a problem with trespassers taking the glass, that they ended up bulldozing the pit to prevent more theft. A bunch of the glass ended up on the lapidary market for a while.

Here’s a couple cut nodules I picked up in a collection last week. Does anyone recognize where they may be from?

First is red with some sorta metalic (hematite?).

Here’s the rough side. Almost looks like Brenda but I don't think it is

Second nice yellow plumes. The white spots are paint overspray

Hey folks! Christa and I took a little trip this past Saturday to escape the big city for a while. We went for a cruise up historic Route 80 to see the old Gillespie damn and bridge. The bridge is one of only two surviving multiple span steel through truss bridges left in the state. Pretty damn neat!

Coming up on the Gillespie damn bridge

In 1993 the Gillespie damn broke due to catastrophic flooding

We found migratory birds were enjoying the area

Just around the corner are fertile farm fields, and in the distance vapor plumes from the nuclear power plant

Lots of big herons hanging out in the fields

We turned off the highway and took a dirt road out in the desert to spend a few hours hounding.

Had a beautiful hawk come circle around to see what we were up to.

More curious critters emerging from the brush to say hi

Definitely had a great day out there, and we found a few agates as well!

Most of these are coated with a caliche crust. It’s hard to tell what you’ve found until you window

And we found what looked like an old cordless phone way out in the middle of nowhere. Turned out to be a radiosonde temp and humidity unit from a weather balloon!

Interestingly enough we found one these out in the desert back in 2014.. same maker but a different model.
