Wandered out to the shop today, this little piece of picture jasper was laying by the bull wheel so figured I better sand on it some. not quite ready for polishing but close.

Hey woodman - just wanted you to know how much I appreciate this thread, and other posts by you helping to ID various woods.
We just picked up a small pile of rocks, and thanks to you I think I can ID one piece of oak. It has "rays" like you pointed out in a thread recently.
I wouldn't pretend to put an firm ID on it, but it was fun to recognize those features in a piece. Incovenient flat shape less than 2" thick max, but I will clean it up someday and split it so we can get at least one good face.

While most Oak has the rays, not all Oak do. Also there are other woods that also have rays. Sycamore for one. It is fun trying to figure out what is what!

This is a piece of Stinking Water OAk. You can clearly see the growth rings and the medullary rays. Not all Oak have the rays!

. is tgis possibly stinking water petwood? Nice piece but I don't see anything that says Stinking Water to me, but with photos it is real hard to say for sure. Would have to see more.
