So... we had a lot of rain recently. After said rain, my wife noticed many tadpoles in the "gutter" between our driveway and the street. Guess our local frogs decided that was a good place to lay eggs. (it wasn't!) Once the rains passed, the yard was so saturated that it kept draining into the street for quite some time. Tadpoles thriving. Well, the yard quit draining and the area with water dried up. okay... uh... not okay. Tadpoles MUST be saved. *sigh* This involved my (NOT the wife unit!) having to get water from the well, no chlorinated city water, and pouring this where the tadpoles live so they didn't die. This worked for a few/several hours before the water seeped out or evaporated. Meaning, water had to be fetched and taken to the F'ING tadpoles several times a day. seriously So, today I went to Petsmart and bought an air pump, and the couple other things needed to have aerated water in a cat litter box. Set up pan, for tadpole habitat. Well, the tadpoles had to get from their not so ideal place of hatching to their new home. How does one catch half inch tadpoles in less than an inch of water you may wonder. With a spoon. seriously One or two at a time. And, should you be wondering, what do tadpoles eat... Shredded zucchini, spinach and bread - so far. As well as each other should they need another food source. Seem to be quite happy with the zucchini and bread. Google says egg yokes too. May try that tomorrow. I don't recall that being single was a bad thing ...

I had to share this with my man. Too funny. But, I'm sure the tadpoles will grow up to be well adjusted, loyal frogs.
I knew a guy who custom built his home with a waterfall "pond" in the bedroom. No kidding- interesting fellow. He wanted frogs in his pond. So, he bought some frogs. Unfortunately, they escaped the pond and were all over the house. He learned after the fact that they want to stay where they were raised. So, next he got some tadpoles and raised them in the pond. They matured into frogs which stayed in his pond and he was very happy. The end.

Well, the tadpoles seem to be all present and accounted for this morning. Not that I counted them...
I was wondering if the sound of the air pump might attract a raccoon or other critter with tadpoles on it's menu. May come up with a cover today to prevent such. Chicken wire or the like.
James, are you talking about the Spanish moss? Added that for something the little 'uns could hide in.
Tadpoles love whole wheat bread. Zucchini a close second.
Aside: Google scares me. After rehoming the tadpoles, I came to the computer to see what they might eat.
Typed in "What do" - on the way to typing "what do tadpoles eat?"
Google auto fill in drop down options were:
what do you mean what do lizards eat what do tadpoles eat what do you mean lyrics
I had NOT Googled this question before. Asked wife and she had not been or my computer or asked such on it either.
What The Heck??

Those are the most common "what do" phrases typed at Google. So Google offers them up to save you time.
Seems you aren't the only frog-dad.
I like it Capt. Bob - Frog-dad
What species?
Prolly greens??

Back in the "old days" it was said your garbage man knows more about you than anyone else, now its the computer-internet system.

What species? I have no idea. Not a lot of Frog Hours under my belt.
We do have small thumbnail sized frogs and then larger toads in the yard. Guessing these are the thumbnail species.

Never heard anything from them. But haven't listened for them. Look like this: Greenhouse Frog - Eleutherodactylus planirostris ? (Google) Tiny things, jump around like crazy when disturbed. Fast as heck, be tough to catch.

Watered lawn today and forgot sprinklers were on. Water back in street gutter. Added about 50 to 75 more tadpoles to kitty litter pan today. Probably have over 200 now. Kinda amazed that they can go so long with no standing water. Must have some moisture left under leaves etc in gutter, but some of that gutter area has not had standing water for a few days. Neighbors must be wondering what the heck I'm doing squatted down in the street with a spoon and a bucket!

Didn't read that about the live birth, my bad. No big tree frogs here. Thousands of little lizards, but no big frogs. We have our first ready to leave the nest. 'least he thinks he is ready. *sniffle*

Yes, it's ALL her fault!
mostly™
Now I have to figure out a way to keep the lizards from eating them as they leave the water.
Don't see that happening. Lizards owe me big time.
