Think of it another way, you have two one-wheel grinders, hard to use more than one wheel at a time and none requiring much hand pressure. If mine, I would put the 1/4 on.

Be sure to have a solar filter on the lens of any camera pointed at the sun, even if only a lens cut from the available eclipse glasses taped over the camera lens. This can be easily removed during totality, then replaced when the sun comes back out.

We always gauge the day of the week by "colored funnies day", thanks captbob.

We agree it is unusual for Hampton area, nice piece to look at. Do you hunt off Price-Twelvemile or go up North of the ranch?

That's a very nice build there, well thought out and clean, my compliments. One thing I do see, it looks in the pictures like the belt pulleys are way out of alignment from motor to shaft. Bringing them into line so the belt runs straight will make the belt and the motor a lot happier, and they will live longer.

Before you start building, give thought to how much rock you plan to tumble and how big the pieces are. If you have a bucket of stuff no bigger than ping-pong balls, don't build a tumbler with a 5-gallon barrel. As far as PVC barrels being "the cheap way out", I disagree, they are fine, and quite durable. The speed of the barrel is dependent on the size, slower as the barrel gets larger. I set 6" PVC barrels up to run ~28 R.P.M., seems to be a good average for roughing and finishing.
No hassle, this stuff is a lot of what the forum is all about.

If you have built a tumbler as you said, why are you asking about barrel size? Barrel size largely dependent on size and quantity of rock to process. Speed of barrel dependent on size, and to a degree desired roughing method desired; jamesp has this pretty well worked out.

coloradocliff, the mtl. we found near Malheur Lake was interesting to look at but so porous it wouldn't be anything other than yard debris. amygdule, looks like you have some sawmill experience too, the clinkers from the boilers were my first thought on this thread.

I lube the rods with a light coat of vegetable oil, seems to slip better than when water-wet from a hot water soak.

Thanks for the trip coverage, always enjoy seeing the places you go. Few ever get rich mining, but several people we know have a lot of fun trying, and maybe making a little for the effort.

Come back next year snuffy, and you will likely see that bush being about twice as big as this year. Birds spread the seeds like crazy, it grows like crazy, and it makes most people crazy trying to control it; but the berries sure are good.

My motivation to get the O-ring at the local parts house/industrial supply wasn't to "save a buck"; it was far more handy for me. I came right by the place on my way home from work.

Carol gets it from a friend; she and her husband are growers and he makes up the oil concoction. Fairly costly but not as much as doc. prescribed stuff would be. She says worth it.

My wife had the bottom ~11% of her back fused on Apr. 28, long recovery. She is using a marijuana oil with some other stuff in it [topical application] rather than opiate pain meds, it's working quite well.

We were given two 3lb. tumblers, one w/o band. Got a 1/4" diameter [the ring material] O-ring that will just slip inside the barrel; barrel inside diameter same as O-ring outside diameter, works great for me. Good auto parts or industrial supply places stock a supply of O-rings.

Thanks for the trip coverage, a part of the country we hope to see one day. My wife says unfair to have lobster in McD's, the few times we have tried it out here it was like eating a warmed Goodyear. A friend toured the country a couple years ago, said Maine is the place for lobster, and great scenery.

That's a nice, simple, and accessible system, I like that. I did a feed works ohaul on a hyd. feed saw several years ago, don't remember the brand, but it had a Ford engine oil pump driven by a 1/4", 1/4 drive socket, buried in a plumbers nightmare.
