My concern with hinging that heavy of a lid on the blade [heavy] side of the saw is that it might pull the saw over; support foot from floor would prevent it from happening. To load a rock of the max. size mentioned, the lid will have to be opened very wide.

Opinion here; stick w/7 as long as you can. Had to go to 10 and don't think much of it, too much peripheral stuff, KISS. We have a non-internet desktop w/XP on it and use it as much as possible, has lots of older but usable programs on it, and the older hardware still works too. I find anything to do with photos to be more difficult with 10, dumb OS or dumb me

First class solution, looks like that rock is pretty close to round.

It looks to me as if your deflection figures are calculated on a 400lb. point load at the center of the rails, not spread out over the 4 contact points that are 15" apart [2 points on each rail] on your drawing. If I'm right, your deflection would be much less than the 3/32" on the 1 1/2 " rails.

The "forgotten spot below the lip" isn't really forgotten, it's missed because people don't get their eyes checked/glasses adjusted regularly.

I'm like my dad's uncle, he shaved every week or 10 days whether he needed it or not. Facial hair, yup I've got some, all seven of 'em.

No point in making it "simple" when you can make it a lifetime memory, very nice.

That's quite a find, nothing like a nice walk on a gravel road.

When I was 8-10 years old, having my dad say I spend most of my time looking at rocks while fishing along a nearby river. He said once he thought maybe he better weigh me out before going home.

To have the penny go would be a little sad, and no longer would people be able to add their 2cts. worth in a comment. Hopefully if a dollar coin became standard the Gov. could find a design easily identifiable as being a dollar rather than a quarter; punch a hole in the existing one.

Thoughtful of your neighbor for the handicraft thankyou gift, it's a nice one. We think nothing beats homemade, true expression of a person.

I've picked up a couple new-old-stock [new, but has set stored for a while] motors for $60-65 at a local motor rebuild shop. That's about 1/2 the price of a new one. I think you would be best getting a 1/2 hp. motor.

Thanks for the look, I've seen a 36" HP, and that drop saw is a spacesaver by comparison, but still plenty big.

Nice work, good to be able to go to a school that is affordable and productive from your standpoint. Thanks for the report.

zarguy, we were given a 3lb. Thumlers by an old friend, lid retaining ring missing. I went to our local auto/industrial supply and got a 1/4" [nominal] diameter o-ring that just fits down inside the barrel, I call it a "slip fit", doesn't fall in but free to slide in. It has worked fine for years. Did I record the size, no, 20/20 hindsight.

You say "thank you for bearing with me...", egad, I and likely many others look forward to "bearing with you" so as to get a look at the next thing you have created. Your talent and patience are greatly appreciated here.

That sounds like some good roughing material. Might be worthwhile to try to find out where your company gets it notjustone.

Urethane O-rings are designed to be used as drive belts, here I have to order them, maybe they are easier for you. I've used vac. belts on a machine very successfully, small tumbler but it has run for years.
