Di drocknut - hope you get rid of that nasty infection soon. Sinus infections suck. Sending you some healing vibes, my friend! Thank you my friend. They are appreciated.

Great bunch of entries. I'm not going to do the challenge this month, I've had a bad sinus infection since the middle of this month and am on antibiotics that are kicking my butt so I'm too tired to even think straight. Good luck to all. Dang Diane! Sorry to hear you've got this going on...like Tela said, summer seems to make it an even worse time to go through it. I agree Jason, summer makes a sinus infection feel even worse.

I was reading all the post on here and read Lee’s remark about it being a fun cab contest. Also Pat and Tela were very kind to encourage me to enter my “sad cab” so why not? Its just for fun, I know this cab needs work but it was fun to do and to learn more. The material was gifted by James jamesp. The slab/cab was cut with a tile saw and worked by hand with a dremel and polished in the lot o. Like Jason’s it is what James calls Rio cobble, I dont know what this specific material is.

liveoakThank you Patty! It was hard! Wish the polish was better. I think I need to do a good sanding before the lot o.

Great start ashley. It won't take long till you graduate to cab perfection. Rocks are nothing like shaping plastic, metal or wood, that's for sure ! They fight being reduced ! Looks like a unique jasper. There a 100's of jaspers at the Rio that have some very strange color and pattern combos. There are so many chemicals and metals in the volcanic rocks clays and soils to affect colors.

OK, Here's my entry :
A Dragon's Tooth, made from "Dragon's Blood Jasper ".
Although I don't think my dragon had much blood in him, as there is not much in his tooth.
It's my first try at carving something, I have a flex shaft clamp that I use in the tray of my cabbing unit, with a little loc-line water mister. But even with this set up the inner curve was very difficult, I guess I haven't thrown enough $ at diamond carving & tooling yet (although I'm working on it). In the end, a combo of SIC and diamond paste , I was finally able to get a reasonable shine on my curve.
I don't want to admit how much time I have in this cab. But I learned some things, so in the end, I think it was profitable in that way.
Here's my slab - cut on my diamond band saw :
And my grinding set up :
It was an interesting challenge, even though I picked it, I thought it would be easier than I found it.
I think I just made it hard on myself with this shape.

Looks like sunset jasper. I find it in Central and Northern Nevada. Here is some tumbled.

liveoak - Well...since I've been "binge-watching" Game of Thrones from 11pm-1am every night, it would seem your entry looks familiar! LOL - Way to cut your teeth at carving a cabochon! (I couldn't resist!) - Great entry!
