All the oolite I see is much coarser... and if it is oolite, it almost seems like it must be metamorphosed?? Its really hard. Here's an example... not sure of scale...

Can you show some pics of what oolite you have seen that looks like that? I googled it and cant come up with anything like that. But it was what I first suspected. We are close to a lot of limestone...

I have no idea where the source is... and I'd like to know! I have found some beautiful green and red jasper, but nothing yellow/orange!! I would like that!
The river drains SOOO much country and so many mountains worth of material that aren't even there anymore...

Here snowmom... I looked more closely at this rock last night, have it in my pocket right now. I really have no idea whatsoever what it is... But I did notice the spheres, and you'll see this, appear to be hollow inside. Maybe some sort of diatoms??? hereya go... not sure what these will look like full size, just viewed on phone so far... iphone6 pics... Zoomed in, little blurry...

I think Starguy should help us setup a field trip!!
About 10 years ago my dad and i went to Emeral Creek and brought home 3 five gallon buckets of material... we ended up with about 30 dodecs... all are crusty with no "garnet" showing on the outside. I threw 3 in a tumbler (they are still in there) and with weekly checks they dont seem to have much quality. They are marble sized... you can see garnet in them, but they are mixed with ?? iron and such I gues... I may look at them again tonight and take a few photos...
So Starguy... are there still smoe good spots to go look around other than the developed site the FS runs now? You mentioned crystals... can a guy find good crystal digging around those areas too?
Love that area,
Ernie

I have no idea if it would related to this thread, but we found a rock on the Yellowstone the other day that is completely fascinating... I am going to try and get some good macros of it tonight and post them... the entire rock is composed of tiny (relatively speaking... maybe 1/2 mm...) spheres... ranging in colors from cream to red if I remember right... really fascinating... pics tonight! (I hope, Im trying to remember where it is!!)

Im not sure what serpentine looks like, but the piece is basically jasper... with those little white and red inclusions!
I'll post more if I cut them up and such!

Man... that was a nice piece of glass!! My dad builds coffee tables out of elk and moose antlers and that would have went very nicely on top of one!!
On the other hand... I bet you get some nice little tumbles out of it!!!
I am going to have to try the marble deal!!!

SO this is obviously a labor of love... by the time I drive my 12.5 mpg truck 150 miles round trip to walk on the river bank for 5 hours... then buy grit, tumblers... etc... and buy power... in a year I've got well over a thousand bucks into tumbling rocks!!! I could probably buy an extraordinary amount of BEAUTIFUL specimens for a thousand bucks every year!!! Although, my rock hunting trips are commonly mixed with fishing and hunting and swimming and such... so its not ALL tumbling expenses...
But I love it, and ya gotta do what you love right? However, considering the cost, I will be a little more careful about tumbling "crap" that really isn't that special. A lot of these river rocks that Im tumbling would probably be well served hit with a shot of lacquer since they are dang smooth already... the agates and wood are worth tumbling for sure!
I am going to keep my eyes open for 1/6 and 1/8 hp motors and I think ultimately I want to set up a tumbler with one motor that will run my 3 big barrels and a few 6# Lortones...
That 1/4 hp motor was running hot, now its not at all. I think those bearings were gummed up or something from sitting so long, cause that one pillow block got pretty dang hot to start with but now all four are running cool...
Thanks all!!

$24.50 if I use the bigger, 1/4 hp motor... I wonder what my little Lortone 12# uses... I bet its no more than half of that $19 per month deal... got me thinking....

Hmmm... looks like my tumbler would cost about $19 per month to run... I can see the benefit of running a LOT of barrels on one motor...
