Yep, in the last 2 years I've found at least five different flavors of coral. I'm not sure why, but I cherish each one!

It's just another of the little guys in front of it Fossil. What are those called? I could have picked up a 5 gallon bucket of them!

Thanks Gunner. Things got a little hectic and the Internet had to be sacrificed for a bit! As the summer went on we found more and more... Kind of a cool story... We were driving a road in some hills outside of Mosby, MT. A couple hundred yards off the road is this big rock, like a granite Boulder. Not huge, maybe a 250# rock. But... It's the only one... For miles! I decide to go take a look, knowing it's probably a glacier erratic, but it just drew me to it. As I get 10 yards from it I look down and start seeing mother of pearl and baculite fragments! Jack pot! The fossil outcrop had nothing to do with the erratic, but the erratic called me out! Turned out to be the best spot of the summer, and I'll be back there soon! Found this guy there: Not sure what to do with it, but I think it will clean up nicely!!

So I was in an area that had calcite crystals just outcropping all over and as I poked around trying to find cool ones, I started finding shell fragments. Then I started finding rock matrices just full of shells. At some point I sloughed a big rock apart and this guy was in the middle. Not a great specimen. I didn't realize they were fairly common though, so I was absolutely pumped when I found it! These are some of the other mollusks I found in the area.

I am starting a new post from my phone and am interested to see if it will work! I feel pretty blessed to live in Central Montana, with regard to fossils, agate and of course, fossil wood! This last summer opened up some new interest in fossils as my job had me in the hills and on the rivers and one side Benny was scooping up fossils left and right! I didn't make any extraordinary finds, but I'm hoping to change that this summer! I'm now going to insert a pic of my first ammonite find just to see if it works.

I will have to find someone to slice and dice it... I think I may just throw it in some 220 and roll it for a bit, then in the polish... can cut it later...
hmmm... maybe I should be looking for a saw!!

I pick up the non agatized stuff and will throw it in a pile by the house... still love it! Some of it seems to take a decent polish, but obviously the agatized is much better!
Are you in MT?

Oh... Im about 7 hours from there James, but my dad is just 1 hour north out of Couer D'Alene...
We have a garnet spot here in MT... more than one for sure, but one main one... its in the Ruby Mountain area... Ruby Reservoir is famous for just scooping up the gravel on the shore and finding garnets... but a geologist I work with and I have been looking at geologic maps and trying to find more sources. There are two big garnet mines just south west of the lake where they mine abrasive garnets. 7-10% garnet in some of the alluvium up there I guess. We want to locate some bedrock outcrops where the garnets are weathering out and poke around a bit. "Most" of the area close to the garnet hot spots is private, but there are a few pieces of public we are going to see if we can get into...
Im a fish biologist (and wildlife) and have spent a lot of time picking rocks out of creeks, but I cant say I've ever run into a good concentration of garnet sand... I suppose I may have missed it, but I am ALWAYS looking for rocks!!!
I"ll get some pics of my garnets tonight maybe and put them up to see what Brent thinks!
