beefjello, #8 is talking to me. Something about imprisoned cabs needing to be released. We should do a mind meld. We'd cut some awesome cabs! Lynn

captbob, I'm interested in a cheaper source for the barrel retaining ring for the 3lb barrels. Mine is missing somewhere in the garage, so I can't measure it. I'm not sure what type of rubber it's made out of either. Have you found a good source? Lynn

It is indeed Indian Blanket. I quarried this myself at the site in Enterprise, Utah. My friend was tight with the site owner and I came home with about 50+ Lbs. Would that be Don Sutton? Lynn

Someone's been busy. Looks like fun time! The 8th picture looks like some pretty nice Indian Blanket jasper. Let's see closeups of the cabs when you're done. Lynn

meviva I'm curious about the Enterprise Agate. As in Enterprise, Utah? Who sold it? Lynn That is what the guy called it. He did say it came from near Enterprise Utah. I don't know who he is but I think he was in the second row, we were heading to Tony's booth and stopped there on the way. I have a friend who was selling at the Pow Wow who may have had some. If it was at Desert Gardens, I may know that guy too. Lynn

You could mark it and score it on both sides with a utility knife. Then snap it on the scored line. Lynn

@bluesky, were the second & third pix the booth of a guy from Minnesota named Ron? It looks familiar. I bought from him a couple of times. Lynn

Look at the Riker Mount web page. Google wholesale riker Mounts, they have plastic products along with the ones you mentioned. You can buy there in quanity with a deep discount. I have bought their display cases by the case very reasonable. agatemaggot , I've been to several Riker Mount web sites with no joy. Please provide a link to where you say they are offered. I've seen sectioned plastic inserts that go into the regular Riker boxes, but not what I described in my OP. Lynn

I'm looking for Riker boxes or Butterfly boxes or whatever name you call them. You know the ones used to display & transport cabs, pendants, etc. What I'm used to are made of chipboard covered with black leather textured paper. They are filled with soft cotton-like material & have glass in the top. The top & bottom pieces are held together by inserting pins through the sides. I'm sure many of you know the kind. The trouble with paper-covered chipboard is that they fall apart & the paper wears through over time, especially when used to transport cabs to shows, etc. That's why I want plastic ones. The size I'm looking for is 12 x 16 x 3/4". I'd also really like some that are the same dimensions as the stacking plastic display trays I have: 8.25 x 14.75 x 3/4. Every vendor I've found only has the cardboard Riker boxes. Here's an example: www.amazon.com/Riker-Specimen-Mount-12-16/dp/B005VDNO6I/ref=pd_sim_23_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B005VDNO6I&pd_rd_r=2879QZANWFD67HHKGVSN&pd_rd_w=spug5&pd_rd_wg=aeEbi&psc=1&refRID=2879QZANWFD67HHKGVSNSurely someone makes a plastic version. I am on page 7 of Dave's compilation of articles. Challenged but doing OK at deciphering. Fascinating to say the least. A very hungary mind. WHERE do you get all this stuff Da Vinci Dave ? Dave's body isn't cooperating with with him too well these days, but his mind never stops! Lynn

Dean Otteson passed away on Oct 26 2016. Dean's wife is having health issues too. His brother David Otteson supposedly is in charge of the mine. I think the rumor about it being sold or leased to Chinese or Koreans is not true.
Let's have some collective optimism that it'll reopen in the future!
19 people from our rock club went last April. It was a blast & we all brought home some great turquoise. I've been cabbing it & silversmithing it. You have to learn to cab a different way. You chase the veins. I'm not talking about making ribbon turquoise cabs, but positioning the vein so it covers the entire face of the cab. Backing or filling is often required. Lynn

I dug a couple of pounds of Turquoise last April near Tonopah Nevada. The mine isn't open right now due to a death in the family. I'm hoping it will open again. I will definitely go back. It was a great day & everyone in our rock club came home happy. Lynn

thekingofrock, Welcome to the forum from Southern Utah. You sure have more patience with the geometric shapes than me. I cut freeform cabs because I can get away with less precision. The trade-off is that lumpy curves don't look good. Curves have to flow smoothly or look amateur. I also like the fact that you're using scrap material and discarded tools. When I was a kid I made many cabs from scraps of slabs scrounged from the driveway of a local rock shop (with permission). That's how I learned to make tiny cabs. You get extra points for posting pix with your first post. Like Scott (Shotgunner) says "Without pictures, it didn't happen". Keep posting! Lynn

orrum, I've never turned one inside out, but I've re-coated worn 600 grit SiC belts with diamond. I figured the worn 600 was about as effective as a 1200, so I've put 300, 600, & 1200 diamond on them. Lynn
