Yahoo! Finally a bunch of pictures of rock finds! Holy cow Jamie, you really got some pretty finds and it totally amazes me that no only does the ranch never get hunted out, but it seems every time I see pics of finds, the material is different looking than what I've seen from there before. Man the variety in those hills is absolutely amazing! That has got to be one of the most awesome hunks of Flower Garden I've ever seen from there and the one with the red tubes and eyes and the little fortification hunk are real goodies. Heck they're all pretty! Glad to hear you all had a safe trip and returned home with bags of goodies. Loving the pics! Keep them coming folks!...mel

To everyone who was there - thanks for the gifts...the beautiful cabs...the walking sticks... the Ballad of the Stupid Stoop...the Guinness, my little Marfa Texas cab...the necklace. I treasure them all.
The food was fantastic! Dorothy made the best Irish spaghetti ever. Jamie, your beans and jerk tenderloin were AWESOME! I hope I made your list of friends you will see again no matter what! *So does Fergie*
Well, HEY! Looks like I managed to avoid the cameras...I'm not good at goodbyes. I sure wish I could have stayed longer.
It was fun. Can't wait to hear from you RTHers who are still there.

Cher: *LOL* Well, I ain't no Lucy but I'll splain it too you anyway. Flower Garden Agate is the common name or trade name assigned to a multicolored sort of moss/plume agate found in south Texas and adjacent areas of Chihuahua, Mexico. It's characterized by flower bed type colors mainly in red, orange and yellow and more or less densely packed moss and tiny plumes. Pic #3 from Jamie's set of rock pics looks to be an exceptional example.....mel

Looks like a wonderful time and great rocks were had by all! Wonder what combined total tonnage has been removed from the ranch?!

The pet wood is from the Stillwell Ranch. Condor took Mailman and me out there on Tuesday. There was pet/opalized wood all over the place. You couldn't move 2 feet without finding another piece in a different color. There were also some really nice agates there too. Condor will be mailing my rocks home tomorrow so I should have pics by Tuesday. Joe's right when he says tonnage. My total from WWR was 62lbs and I got another 40 from Stillwell Ranch.

Wow you mean there's more than one ranch down there that will let you pick over their rocks? That's just cool!!
Condor, how about a closeup of that big yellow one. Top pic on the left side, looks like it has some red and white mixed in. Looks kind of cool.

Hi Condor! Folks, Condor made us all walking sticks and let me tell you we all loved that! We used them the whole time we were there, although, errrrrr, Condor.......we had to make an "adjustment" in height for our littlest rockhound.....I hope you don't mind.....lol

Boy! What a great time we had all around. Some people did some really thoughtful things let me say. It certainly was the best trip I've ever had with our family! I wanted to thank you all for helping make that happen!
I had some car problems a couple of times and boy, let me tell you, there's no sinking feeling any greater than realizing you are broke down in the absolute middle of nowhere! The uplifting part is when you then realize you are surrounded by great people. Rockhounds. In truth, you really have no problems when good people are nearby. Tom helped me out when my battery was dead and Don and Kim helped me out when my water hose tee broke in two and shut me down. We made it back safe and sound and now have memories that will last us a lifetime. My boys will never forget this trip and hopefully, all will work such that we can do this every year. It seems the word is that this may just become an annual thing. A big deal. The big sheebang. The Mother of All Rockhounding Trips....lol I dunno. Here's some pics folks. I'll take pics of the rocks later....still in the trunk of the car....lol I'm tired OK? Here we are at the Sunday House Inn in Alpine packing up to head to the ranch. The rooms are big there and when you have 2 boys like mine....lol...you need the room.
Folks, let me tell you after this trip, I'm getting my 1 ton Ford van running right and modified for camping/hounding trips. My caddy has grown to expect abuse from me, but I learned this trip that for maximum effective hounding, you need a vehicle that will "get you in there". Pretty rough country folks. That's how we like it. A scenic view headed to the ranch. South of Alpine on the 118.Rock climbing rockhounds. Little rockhound gets a helping hand from big brother.Where the deer and the Antelope play. The ranch and Rock Shop. The first day we hounded on the west side of the highway (his ranch is on both sides of the hiway). The pickings are good, don't get me wrong and you can find some pretty big, nice stuff laying there.....but......the east side is alot better. It's like picking between good and great as to where you want to hunt. Cathedral Mnt. is just a beautiful backdrop to the scenery there at Woodward. Susan has posted the best pic I've seen of it yet I think (the one with the cloud wrapped around it). Here's my contribution. Here's the dormant volcano right by the campground. It's not on Woodward property and all I saw around it was nasty ol' basaltic stuff anyway. The rich SiO2 good stuff flowed or blasted itself over to Woodward property. To me, the volcano looks like a volcanic neck, where after the eruption ceased, the magma crystallized into the mass you see. Obviously, erosion has exposed the volcanic neck for us all to see over 100's of thousands of years. My understanding from Trey is that the flow on his property is 750 feet thick. To me, it would seem that the ranch can't ever be picked over because it just keeps getting exposed with every rain and wind storm. I can see rockhounds a thousand years from now getting the good red plume at woodward Ranch. The east side of the hiway has the classic "easy pickings". It's pretty rough in there and the Caddy made it to the first hill and that's where I left it. We walked down the first little hill into a wash area and there it all was. Laying there. Everywhere. All around us. Laying there. Here's some various pics of the campsite and creek we took. Ms. Rockhound didn't give me permission to post this pic. Living on the edge! That's me! Here's a video of her crossing the creek...lol She's a real rockhound I must say. smg.photobucket.com/albums/v47/trouble1957/?action=view¤t=WW18.flvMore assorted pics from the creek by the campsite. All the rockhounds were wiped out by the time we got to hit the road on Thursday due to car problems. We were a mess.....lol The boys were acting pretty much normal though. Sorry I took up so much bandwidth and the slow dl for you dial-up folks. I just wanted to share something besides the rocks we gathered and got from other good folks first. To me, the experience is such as this in my mind. We go out and gather rocks for various reasons. Semi-precious stones. We prize them. But, the meeting of good people, gathered together with a common thing we all love to do, now, that's GOLD baby. Pure GOLD.
I'll post the semi-precious stuff later.
