Thanks all.
A huge thanks to Jamesp for sending me the Bots and some other killer coral tumbles. It's tough to make a cab for bezel setting out of a tumble, but it can be done with patience and planning. I especially love the contrast between the Rootbeer base color and the irregular pattern of white material. James had these Bots polished to perfection!!!!

OMG, that piece is mighty fine. Never dreamed I would find a rock that deserved such a setting. Thank you! (blushes, says Aww, shucks, hangs head and kicks at can :-) Maybe in another 10 years or so I will graduate to working in a "studio" instead of a "shop" Nah! On second thought, I'll never get that full of myself!

radio getting ready to do his stuff on a botryoidal tumble from the coral zone. With a setting like that a tumor would look great. Looking forward to it's completion Arlen. You,sir, are much too kind! I just made a post in the "Creations" section showing the other design and three cabs and asked for votes on which design to go with. Ultimately though, the decision is yours as this piece will be headed your way once completed Mods, please feel free to merge the two threads if you see fit

I finally got around to reworking three of the Bots so they are suitable for bezel setting. The Wife looked over my shoulder while i was making the sketches and went all gaa gaa over the cab and design. I'm taking votes on which design to go with on this Bot. #1. Simple design with twisted silver on the left side and beads on both sides of the bail #2. Twisted silver on both sides, beads at the bottom and left side of bail Please forgive the crappy cell phone pics

Interesting concept! I hope you can market and produce while making a profit. I've often considered having a large bucket of polished stones for sale at the shop. I keep a bag or two under the counter and give a few to kiddos who show an interest.

Thanks all! His cab was quite difficult to set as the corners were cut much lower than the rest of the stone and quite thin. I used heavy 26 ga bezel, so rolling it over the corners without breaking the Malachite was a challenge. I don't like the slight gap between bezel and stone, but quit while I was ahead. I would have been heartbroken if I had cracked the cab!

Cool find!! I'm going with the stamp/imprint theory rather than a scrubber of some type Even back then I'm thinking they would offset every other bump to make scrubbing more efficient.
Several years ago while hunting on a huge ranch in Arizona, I paused to water a tree and spotted what I thought was a piece of a terra cotta pot someone had used for target practice. I flipped it over with my boot and my jaw dropped when I saw a faded pattern on the other side! I started looking around and there were pieces lying all over the place! most were only a couple inches across and were not all that close to each other to suggest a pot that was dropped or destroyed at that spot.
I always wondered when, how and why they ended up in such a desolate place with no obvious shelter or water near by

looks like about 75% good stuff in the mix, so you should get some very pretty tumbles out of it. It is hard and takes a wonderful polish other than an occasional pit. please post up the finished goodies so we can drool :-)

"for the first time..."Are you expecting more? Gosh dad I hope that's a slip of the tongue!! Gorgeous cuff and congrats on the daughter in law. Just meaning he is 29 and has finally found the special gal he wants to marry. Seems these days it is common to be married and divorced a time or two by age 30

Pretty common here in Missouri to find arrowheads with fossils in them. One has to wonder what the person knapping those thought the little critters were:-)

Beautiful set on that ammonite!!!!!!! Thankee kindly Sir! Because the edges are so delicate and prone to chipping, or the entire thing cracking along the chamber lines, I back every one of them with plastic steel.

The Malachite cab with the bulls eye pattern was one of the first real cabs our Son cut at the tender age of 14 and has been in a special display for 15 years. He is getting married for the first time this September, so I had the idea to incorporate it into a jewelry piece for my Wife's birthday so she could wear it to the wedding. I cut another piece of Malachite in matching size and shape, but different pattern so as not to compete with his cab and set both in a Navajo style cuff bracelet.

just now seeing your post. Is the Ammonite whole, cut in half, or a quarter sized piece of Ammolite from a larger shell? How thick is it? My favorite method of backing Ammonites, Turquoise and other stones is Devcon plastic steel which is very much like JB Weld. This is how I set many Ammonites and it would also work with the flat surface inward so the Ammolite on the outer surface would be visible. Feel free to message me with any questions as I sometimes loose track of threads

The flip side of the bunch......I do see a lot of white.... I can live with that.... Here's a hint for you. Run masking tape around the pieces to form a "dam" and fill the hollows with Devcon plastic steel, or even JB Weld.. That way it adds a lot of strength to the piece, plus gives you a flat surface on the back to use a dop stick and wax. just be careful not to grind deep enough to go through all the layers of paint and into the fill material
