This method works great for glass but is slower for harder materials. Use PVC fittings with velcro and run resin bonded diamond pads cut to diameter. Will be more expensive up front but will cut run time dramatically and be cost effective long term.

Save your money and wait for a lapidary trim saw. Look for a trim saw with variable speed to match the material you are cutting.

I use brown paper bags as the filter. After a week or two of draining, I fold down the bag and place the next rocks to be cut on the bag. This acts as a press to force more oil out. Slow but cost effective.

I use them on rock saws, tumblers, and vibrating laps. They work great.

How many pounds of rock do you plan to run in each barrel? Do you have a plan to lift or move the loaded barrels?

The answer depends on why you are cutting the rock. When cutting sphere preforms, I start by cutting off the side that would be the hardest to clamp in the vice. When cutting agate or wood for specimens, I clamp for the most quality slabs with out re-clamping. When cutting for cabs, I cut for best quality. This may require several face cuts and re-orienting. Thundereggs would be cut for the largest face or orienting with the flow bands.

Petrified wood is my vice. I dabble in other rocks to support the wood habit. I've been fortunate to have lived in NE, CO, WY, and now WA and do a lot of collecting. I enjoy running the saws and laps. I like cutting thundereggs and being the first to see the inside. I consider cutting thundereggs my form of gambling. I'm also in the same rock club as Roy. He got me started on this site.
Cheers! Jerry

With the adapter, are you going to have direct drive and 1750 RPM lap? Whats the diameter of the lap? What speed will the lap operate at?

None of the specimens in this thread have the the appropriate color to be Youngite. Maybe it's the lighting or photo quality.

The aluminum cups and wooden cups in this post are for working cabochons, not spheres. The wood is charged with different grits. Whitey's CAB-O-CUPS was one of the manufactures of the cup setups like this post. I have a Lapidary Journal with more information if needed. Maybe you can find more searching online.

How about the lap in the picture background. Is that available?
