Common opal can be cut in a rock saw with oil and it might absorb some of the oil. I've been told one can soak the opal in water before cutting to minimize the amount of oil it absorbs. If the opal is overheated by cutting, the opal could break apart or pieces will pop off.

The stuff I got came from Washington and most was fell apart when cutting but the solid areas produced beautiful cabs. Chuck This material appears to be the common opal that comes from the diatomaceous pits near George, WA. If so, it is not wood. I agree that a lot of this material falls apart when cut, especially the green material. There are a few good pieces that give outstanding cabs.

Will do. It would be interesting to compare lists of materials and colors.

Cabs with blemishes will sell cheaper than perfect cabs. Wire wrappers look for the blemished cabs as they can incorporate their design to cover up spots or fractures.

When I lived in WY, I used Sun Oil DCA-11. This is a Dust Control Agent that the mines would spray on the roads to keep the dust down. It was also soybean based. It was less than $4/gal if you brought your own buckets. It worked great. I did not have any problems with it going rancid. Now I live in WA and am unable to find it cheaper than the mineral oil. Maybe you can check in to it and see if they are using an additive to keep it from going bad.

Several people have contacted me through the PM feature that is off list. I now have the white material. I'm still looking for the orange agate or jasper that will take a great polish.

For size, let's use a large flat rate box to save on shipping. I would like to see the pictures of the white quartz.

I am looking for orange jasper or agate that has consistent color. I am also looking for white material that can be polished, like howlite without veins. I'm open to buying or trading.

It must be fun to catch the small fish and be a challenge to put them through the rolling mill

Keep the rock wet and don't allow the cerium to dry until you're ready to wash it.

I would contact Baranca, provide the photo, and ask them directly. Seller may be passing seconds as new blades.
